The In-Between Years - family photography on analogue film.

FAMILY

There’s a version of your family that only exists right now.
Not the polished one, or the “everyone look here” one.

The real one.

It could be the cereal bowls left on the side.
The half-built Lego cities & odd socks in random places.
The way they climb onto your lap without asking.

I photograph families on 35mm and medium format film, mostly at home.
Without any heavy direction or structure but as things are now.
With the wonderful bits around the edges kept in.

Film is slow.
Family life isn’t.

Kids don’t pause, nor do they repeat themselves either. They run through the frame, talk over each other, change mood in seconds, and that is the beauty of it.

Photographing this on analogue film means I can’t rapid fire my way through it. I have 10 or 12 frames on a roll and that’s it. So I watch, wait and I respond.

There’s often movement, Blur, and Limbs mid-air.

It isn’t always tidy.

But film holds that chaos in a way that feels honest. It feels closer to how memory works than how a camera “should” work.

Sometimes it’s a roll of film I’ve found at the bottom of a bag, slightly expired, a little unpredictable.

Because family life is unpredictable too.
